I think you want honest answers well I hope you do!
What do you know about making films, do you have any experience in makeing films/videos (not talking about family type) working with sound, lighting, scripts. filming scenes is just the tip of the iceberg. there is so much more. It will be a total waste of money buying a high end camera if you do not know the basics. Even a semi decent pro camera man will produce 100% better films on a cheap basic camera than a person with a top of the range professional camera who does not understand video basics.
You may be beter off spending your hard earned cash on courses learning the trade.
thats just the filming part what about editing? and the equipment needed to produce that sort of video. I hope you have a high end computer, or you are going to need to spend atleast the same amount on a computer to handle the video especially if its a HDD camcorder.
Please dont think I am have a go at you, but there is just so much more to creating a indie flick than pointing a camera.
If you have some experience in this form of media then you should be out there looking for sponsers, talking to banks, pestering companies, even the film industry.
Hope thats some food for thought.
Oh by the way an canon XL1 would be a good start Mini-dv
good luck with the film I hope you get it sorted out.
