Comparing Camcorder Definition?

i’m going to be buying a cheapish camcorder and i wonder how something like the oldish 3ccd panasonic like vdr d300 compares against newer budget hd camcorders with only a single ccd imager but far greater resolution.
i’ll be editing down to sd and mastering to dvd. but which camera will give best results in colour rendering, particularly with flesh tones? or will there be nothing in it?

All consumer video formats are optimized for single CCD cameras, just are. Using 3 CCD will not improve either color resolution or gamut capability. However 3 CCD cameras perform better in high contrast situations making them easier to set up shots that avoid color bleaching. If you are producing DVDs then miniDV is the best source format. HD sounds good until you realize that it requires super high compression as in 100 or 200:1 while miniDV is only 6:1. If you knew how this compression was done, you would not be so impressed with HD quality. The optimum CCD size for NTSC is 680k and PAL is 800k to produce 16:9 widescreen in native resolution. Some multipurpose cameras have megapixels which is ok for still photos, but you will pay a penalty trying to interpolate them to make video.
